If you enjoy watching true crime, whether it be through watching drama series, reading books, or listening to podcasts and documentaries, here are a few recommendations for you!
- Criminal Minds

Criminal Minds is a mystery series based on true crime. It centres around an elite group of FBI agents who work as criminal profilers in a special unit. They analyse America’s most wanted and dangerous killers and work to profile and catch them before they strike again. This series is interesting, suspenseful, and heartwarming at the same time. It isn’t graphic either, so if that sounds like it suits you then go ahead and watch it!
- Zodiac

Zodiac is a 2007 film based on true events associated with the “Zodiac”; a serial killer active in the 1960s and 1970s. The movie focuses on the obsessive nature that the characters have when thinking about the Zodiac killer and how to catch and reveal the Zodiac’s identity.
- Mindhunter

Mindhunter is another thriller series based upon the FBI, however, it is more ominous than Criminal Minds. It centres around Holden Ford and Bill Tench as they attempt to understand and catch America’s worst serial killers through studying their damaged psyches. It is very graphic so if you are sensitive to those types of things, I wouldn’t recommend this.
- The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs is also based on multiple true stories. It was inspired by serial killers Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, and the character “Buffalo Bill’ was inspired by Gary Heidnik; a serial killer. The movie itself is about an FBI agent who seeks help from a psychopathic serial killer and former psychiatrist to catch another serial killer.
- The Abduction of Lisa Mcvey

This is yet again based on another true story of an abduction survivor, Lisa Mcvey. After being abducted and raped by a notorious serial killer, 17-year-old Lisa Mcvey is able to use reverse psychology to get her kidnapper to set her free. However, when she reports this incident to the police, the only person who believes her story is a veteran detective.
- American Murder; The Family Next Door

This is yet another based on a true story regarding the murders of the Watt family which took place in 2018 in Frederick Colorado. This is more of a documentary than a dramatised movie.
- Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

This is a Netflix documentary telling the story of the notorious Los Angeles Cecil Hotel. It is infamous for housing multiple criminals and some of America’s most notorious serial killers. This documentary focuses on the ominous and strange disappearance of Elisa Lam.
- Don’t F*ck With Cats; Hunting an Internet Killer

This is a documentary series on Netflix based on a true story. It illustrates a twisted criminal’s gruesome animal harming videos which drive a group of amateur online users to launch a risky manhunt that drags them into the dark web… leading them to discover more gruesome videos but of humans this time.
- Conversations with a Killer; The Ted Bundy Tapes

This is another documentary series with one of America’s most notorious serial killers; Ted Bundy. He was convicted for more than 30 counts of the murder of young females before being caught in 1978. The documentary takes a deep dive into the mind of this serial killer.
- The Sons of Sam; A Descent into Darkness

This documentary series is based on serial killer David Berkowitz and how many suspect that he was not working alone. Author Maury Terry goes deeper than anyone imagined and his investigation cost him everything.
