January 2- Tweede Nuwe Jaar

Tweede Nuwe Jaar, directly translates from Afrikaans to English as “Second New Year” and as the name suggests, it is celebrated on the second day of the new year. This celebration is deeply rooted in the slave history of Cape Town as slaves were only allowed a single day off work, the second of January, and they spent this day celebrating. This annual event is seen through the streets of Cape Town with performers known as the Kaapse Klopse. On this day, the streets will look like a carnival, filled with bands, music, dancing, and parades.
