We all love to lay down on our couch, grab a favorite snack and relax, don’t we? Relaxation, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is the state of being free from tension and anxiety of any kind. Relaxation is the key to staying prompt as it helps us unplug and take a break from our otherwise hectic schedules. If a tired body is not relaxed, there is a 70% chance of developing mental health issues followed by overall degradation. Hence, for your sake, it is very important to relax and ease off. However, have you ever relaxed to a point where you start feeling anxious? If so, you may be going through a phase of overrelaxation. Here’s how your subconscious can be affected by the latter and how you can combat it.

Overthinking

According to Express UK, the average maximum time needed for a person to relax is 36 minutes a day, which is just around 3 hours a week. But if a person tends to relax a lot more than this given time frame, the phenomenon of overthinking or gushing of unnecessary thoughts is likely to transpire. Overthinking is a state of being buried in thoughts that are usually narcissistic. Overthinking and excessive worrying create feelings of distress and restlessness that may lead to anxiety or depression if left unaddressed.

How to deal with Overthinking?

Tackling with overthinking can take a bit longer and more strenuous than expected, but staying committed is important.

  • Distract yourself- Hum or sing your favourite song or start recapping a good movie or series to keep the thoughts away.
  • Boost your self-esteem- Remind yourself how capable and wonderful you are and develop your positive self. This can be done by including a good amount of ‘me-time’ in your daily routine. (give one or two examples of what me-time means)
  • Live in the present- Overthinking is generally future-based. Focus on what’s going on in the moment and don’t panic about the future. Make sure you enjoy every instant and live in it.
  • Share with someone- Storing a lot of negative thoughts can become emotionally difficult. Speak your mind to someone you trust.
  • Stop, drop and breathe- Whenever your heart alarms you that your negative thoughts are not relevant, STOP immediately, DROP any kind of work you are doing and take 3 deep BREATHs to assure yourself that everything is under control and will continue the way you want it to go (for more information, try these various breathing techniques).

Relaxation is definitely a crucial skill to stay healthy. However, it’s important to make sure that this relaxation does not have a pessimistic effect. Staying busy can help you become more positive and in turn, improve the efficiency of work. As teenagers, the right amount of work can make sure that we don’t overthink and lead ourselves to negative thoughts. As Kevin Ansbro said, “Focus on an ocean of positives, not a puddle of negatives.”
