From rushing to the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards (2009) and declaring that not Taylor Swift but Beyoncé deserved the Best Music Video Award to wearing the “White Lives Matter” shirt during the Paris Fashion Week, Ye’s life has been full of controversies and a rather interesting topic of discussion among netizens – frequent social media users. Even though his flamboyant personality and excellent music led him to stardom and fame, his behavior always creates a stir. Recently, Kanye has been all over Instagram after Adidas cut ties with him. Let’s take a quick peek into his three-week-long downfall and how Ye got banned from Social Media and lost his title as a billionaire.
This is not the first time we hear about Ye being the center of attention. In the past, he claimed slavery was a choice, invited known homophobe, DaBaby, to an event, and defended convicted rapist Bill Cosby. He has also openly shared that he sometimes has his “episode” when he has not been on his medications for his mental health. However, these past few highly controversial weeks may have burned his empire to the ground.
The uproar started when Ye posted a picture of him and conservative critic Candace Owens sporting a “White Lives Matter” shirt in the YZY show at Paris Fashion Week on October 3. Many think that the idea stemmed from the Black Lives Matter movement in the US and was mocking the struggles of black people. Some netizens also believed that the idea might have come from a pro-Nazi group with the same name. Ye then justified this act by saying, “I thought the shirt was a funny shirt, I thought the idea of me wearing it was funny, just a black man stating the obvious.” On his Instagram, he stated, “Everyone knows that Black Lives Matter was a scam now it’s over you’re welcome.” This caused a sense of disdain for the star in some communities. Ye then posted a text conversation with Diddy on his Instagram, accusing Diddy of being controlled by Jewish people. “Ima use you as an example to show the Jewish people that told you to call me that no one can threaten or influence me.” After this act, Ye was swiftly removed from Instagram.
This made Ye turn to Twitter on October 8 after an absence of two years, tweeting, “I’m a bit sleepy tonight, but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE.” He got kicked out of Twitter too. This anti-Semitic comment also led to him losing a lot of respect, money, and a $400 million partnership with Adidas. “Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech,” the company said. As he looks to partner with other fashion houses and resumes collecting royalties, many clients may not be willing to work with toxic Yeezy.
Over the past three weeks, Ye has dug himself into a hole. Even the most devoted Kanye supporters find it difficult to defend Ye’s statements or his new reputation as an anti-Semitic advocate for America’s expanding extremist right wing. Now the question is, will he rebound as usual after all this?
