How to start and stay strong in the new year

Everyone wants to start the year strong; unfortunately, most people feel overwhelmed with all of the unlimited possibilities that lay before us. The new year often brings an overabundance of hopeful resolutions, lofty goals, and well-intentioned promises to live better, eat healthier, and improve various aspects of one’s life. Like this, most start with high hopes and unrealistic expectations and then abandon their goals before the confetti has time to settle. Therefore, it is time to focus on simple methods to start and keep the year strong. Here is a simple and effective three-step method of starting the year out with tremendous momentum and – here’s the hard part – keeping it up.

STEP 1: FORGET

Over the last few weeks, I am fairly sure that most of us have eaten a little more than usual, allowed ourselves a little more freedom, and heard all kinds of good advice on how to get the new year off to a great start. It isn’t that all of this is pointless, but you have to forget what you have done and heard. Forget the good and forget the bad. It is best to start 2022 with a clean slate. Forgetting 2021 will actually help you get a more strategic beginning to 2022.

STEP 2: ATTACK TWO THINGS

Choose your most important aspect for your professional success this year, for example, grades. Then choose the single most important activity that will promote success in your personal life. You probably have several activities you want to tackle for your professional and personal success, but often people pile their “wish lists” so high that they end up neglecting the most important activity. Keep it simple. Force yourself to stick to one activity for your professional success and one for your personal success.

STEP 3: REPEAT STEP 2

For simplicity, step 3 is not something to worry about. If you crush your two most important activities consistently, it is most likely that you will create great momentum and sustainability for having a successful 2022. Success doesn’t have to be complicated; it can be simple. Make these two activities your number one priority. You can write down on paper the two activities that you are going to attack. Once you have them written down, you should post them on a wall, or some place where you will see them daily. Finally, take a moment to block off in your calendar the days and times each month you will complete them. Doing so will help you remember and execute. Start nailing your two commitments immediately, and you will be satisfied with the momentum it creates toward having a great 2022. This will not be easy, but you can do it. If you get off track, remember to FORGET, and then get back on track and attack your commitments immediately.

It is a time of (often dropped) new year’s resolutions, and it can be a time of successful new starts. By simplifying and specifying your goals, you can start and keep your new year strong.
